Stem cells are like your body’s go-to repair team. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) helps pump up the number of stem cells in your bloodstream, leading to better cell regeneration and helping with issues caused by aging and illness.
Studies show that HBOT boosts the activity of different types of stem cells. For instance, when HBOT is mixed with glucose oxidase (GOD) in a unique bioreactor, it increases oxidative stress in tumor cells. This combination can slow down breast tumor growth and prevent it from spreading to the lungs by targeting cancer stem cells.1 Plus, HBOT is known to support the bone-forming abilities of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) even when there’s inflammation, making it a promising option for bone repair.2
When looking at adipose-derived stem cells, HBOT at a pressure of 3 atm has been shown to increase cell survival and growth, change how certain markers are expressed, and boost fat cell formation while reducing unwanted bone cell development.3 Also, using HBOT with stem cells from human baby teeth (SHED) has effectively helped type 2 diabetic rats by improving their pancreatic cell structure and function, lowering cell death, and encouraging the growth of insulin-producing cells.4
In addition, combining HBOT with autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) provides extra protection for kidney function after acute injuries in rodents from reduced blood flow.5 This combo helps lower inflammation and oxidative stress and removes apoptosis markers while preserving kidney structure.6 So, in conclusion, HBOT amps up the healing potential of stem cells for various health issues.
HBOT and stem cells can also help with chronic conditions and debilitating diseases, including managing diabetes symptoms, aiding in recovery from heart attacks, and supporting the creation of new nerve cells.
